Good Luck, Roger Huston

On June 28, 1963, The Meadows Racetrack first opened up for business in North Strabane Township, which is in Washington County.  Nearly 13 years later, a man named Roger Huston started calling races there for the first time.  Over the years, I would watch him call the races on the Meadows Racing Network, which has aired on various TV and cable stations here in Pittsburgh over the years.  Now, over the weekend, Roger called his last race at The Meadows.  I may have heard him call a race or two at The Meadows Racetrack itself over the years.  I actually did it on a Saturday afternoon not too long ago.  I was actually sitting in the food court at the time.  I actually heard his voice over the loudspeakers while I was at the food court.  Roger did a fantastic job in calling the races that I was able to see while I was there that afternoon.

Now, back in July, while I was at The Meadows Casino on a Tuesday morning, I was able to walk downstairs and see some of the exhibits that are there.  They can be found near Meadows Lanes, which is their bowling alley.  While I was downstairs that morning, I saw Roger Huston not once, but twice.  That moment really made my day.

The Meadows Racetrack won’t be the same without Roger.  He was able to give us some class for more than 43 years.  Good luck, Roger Huston!

Joseph Celebrates His Blog’s Fifth Anniversary At Fairview Park!

On August 24, 2019, this blog, which is called “Joseph Pratt’s Interests And Some Other Things,” turned five years old … and, as you might have guessed, I celebrated the milestone at home that morning … and, that afternoon, I celebrated the milestone at Fairview Park.  It was one of the most exciting days of my life.  Whenever I went to Fairview Park for three hours on that day, I was able to go to South Fayette’s Community Day … and I bumped into some of my friends while I was there.  I also bumped into a local congressman while I was at Fairview Park.  I also bumped into a meteorologist from an out-of-town TV station, which is actually quite viewable here in southwestern Allegheny County.

On August 24, 2019, I went to South Fayette’s Community Day, which was in Fairview Park. I also celebrated my blog’s fifth anniversary while I was there.

I also saw some fantastic-looking clouds in the skies above Fairview Park while I was at Community Day.

IMG_20190824_114405223
I saw these clouds in the skies above Fairview Park on August 24, 2019. The clouds here are white and grey … and I saw some “blue holes” in the clouds as well.

Now, while I was at this event, I bumped into some of my friends … and I was also able to snap a selfie with a few of my friends while I was there.  Some of those friends are Dustin Lunn, Michael Meehan and Katie Meehan.

I also bumped into Congressman Conor Lamb, who is from the South Hills.

IMG_20190824_115304989
On August 24, 2019, I introduced myself to Congressman Conor Lamb, who is actually from the South Hills.

While I was at this event, I happened to bump into a TV meteorologist.  Now, this weatherman is not on one of our TV stations here in Pittsburgh, but this station is actually quite viewable in southwestern Allegheny County.  The weatherman’s name is Jeff Oechslein, who is the morning meteorologist at WTOV, which is the NBC affiliate in Steubenville, Ohio.  Let me explain this situation to you.  More than 15 years ago, I was able to watch WTOV on our TVs at my house before we started to get cable TV on just about every TV set in our house.  I would sometimes watch Jeff on the station’s morning newscast … and, in a way, that’s how I recognized this weatherman.

All in all, I had a fantastic day at Fairview Park on August 24, 2019.  I would like to say thank you to the people who were able to bump into me at this event back then … and I would like to say all of you for allowing me to have a blog for five years.  It has grown gracefully since August of 2014.

Joseph Visits Kennywood On KDKA Summerblast Day (Part 2)

Yesterday, in the first part of this two-part blog post, I told you about my trip to Kennywood by describing the day in general.  In it, I told you about the clouds that I saw in the skies above the amusement park, I told you about the friends that I met while I was there and I told you about the station’s Mobile Weather Lab.  Now, today, in the second part of this two-part blog post, I’m going to tell you about some of the personalities that I met while I was at Kennywood Park.  One of them recently retired from KDKA after working there for 37 years … and I will tell you which one it is before I end the two-part blog post.  So, without further ado, let me show you the personalities that I met while I was at Kennywood back on July 26th.

IMG_20190726_125852158
On July 26, 2019, I met KDKA anchor Susan Koeppen while I was at Kennywood Park. Susan anchors KDKA’s afternoon and evening newscasts during the week.

The first personality I bumped into while I was at Kennywood was Susan Koeppen.  Susan anchors the 4:00 and 6:00 newscasts with Stacy Smith … and she anchors the 11:00 newscast with Ken Rice.  She does this during the week.

IMG_20190726_164502477
On July 26, 2019, I also met Lisa Washington and Amy Wadas while I was at Kennywood Park. Both Lisa and Amy are reporters at KDKA … and, just last month, Lisa became the anchor of KDKA’s weekend morning newscasts.
IMG_20190726_170533991
I also met Meghan Schiller, who is a reporter for KDKA, while I was at Kennywood Park on July 26, 2019.

I also bumped into three of KDKA’s reporters while I was there.  They are Lisa Washington, Amy Wadas and Meghan Schiller.  Now, Lisa, Amy and Meghan are some of KDKA’s reporters … and, just last month, Lisa became the anchor of KDKA’s weekend morning newscasts.

Before I tell you which KDKA personality retired after working there for 37 years, I’d like to give you a fun fact.  Just last month, KDKA added a regular Sunday morning newscast for the first time in the station’s history.  It airs from 7 until 9 on Sunday mornings.

Now, I’d like you to see the personality who retired recently after working at KDKA for 37 years.

IMG_20190726_172242234
On July 26, 2019, I met Jon Burnett while I was at Kennywood Park. Jon retired from KDKA back in June after working there for 37 years. He was the weatherman there for a number of years … and, before that, he did “Pittsburgh 2Day” and “Evening Magazine.” He also co-hosted “Pittsburgh Today Live” in recent years.

I was able to meet Jon Burnett while I was at Kennywood Park.  He retired from KDKA after working there for 37 years.  He did “Evening Magazine” and “Pittsburgh 2Day” before he became a weatherman for KDKA.  He also did “Pittsburgh Today Live” for a while in recent years.

I hope you guys were able to enjoy this two-part blog post as much as I enjoyed it.  I really enjoyed myself at Kennywood during KDKA Summerblast Day.  I did see some other KDKA personalities while I was at Kennywood, but I did not want to disturb them since they were fairly busy.

Enjoy the rest of your day, my friends!

Tunch And Joseph

During the second half of my blog’s fifth year, I will give you some chances to revisit some of my past blog posts … and, during the month of July, I will give you chances to revisit posts from my blog’s fifth year. Today, I will give you a chance to revisit a post from January of 2019 … and it is called “Tunch And Joseph.”

Now, just one week before I wrote this blog post, I happened to bump into Tunch Ilkin while I was working in the front part of Bridgeville T.J. Maxx. I was cleaning the shelves that were near the line that goes to the cash registers … and Tunch just happened to walk inside of the store whenever I did just that. Tunch was a player for the Pittsburgh Steelers for more than a decade … and he also does a Steelers-themed radio show called “Tunch And Wolf.” He also does commercials for Colussy Chevrolet, which is located in South Fayette. Anyway, meeting Tunch Ilkin in person was probably one of the best things that has ever happened to me … and it is an experience that I will not forget.

Next time, I will give you a chance to revisit a post from May of 2019 and it will be about one of the classiest people that I have ever known.

In honor of my blog’s fifth year, I’d like to show you five blog posts that I wrote down on or around July 16th in previous years …

Joseph Pratt's Interests And Some Other Things

If you’re wondering why the title of today’s blog post is “Tunch And Joseph,” let me explain the reason why I called it that.  There’s a radio show called “Tunch And Wolf” … and, in it, they talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers.  It’s a little play on words or something like that.  That’s why I called it “Tunch And Joseph.”

Well, anyway, I’d like to tell you about the celebrity that I met while I was working at Bridgeville T.J. Maxx last Friday.  While I was working near the front of the store that morning, I noticed that Tunch Ilkin, who played with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1980 until 1992, came into the store … and he happened to notice that I was working near the front of T.J. Maxx.  While I was working late that morning, I happened to meet Tunch Ilkin in person … and I was able…

Joseph’s Flashback: Joseph Meets A Disc Jockey At The Mall At Robinson!

I have been to The Mall at Robinson many times since it opened in October of 2001 … and I went there on the day that it first opened its doors, which is October 26, 2001.  I have met my friends and my relatives there many times over the past 17 1/2 years … and I may have met a famous person or two there during that time period.

One of those famous people is Dan Dunlap, who was a disc jockey at WISH 99.7 from 1986 until 2014.  I met him at The Mall at Robinson several times over the years … and I have gotten my picture taken with him almost every single time.  WISH 99.7 is the adult contemporary station in Pittsburgh, by the way.

Joseph has met former WISH 99.7 disc jockey Dan Dunlap at The Mall at Robinson several times over the years … and he has gotten his photo taken with him just about every time. This photo is from December of 2012.

Blog Post Number 1,075 Is About A Terrific Disc Jockey

I am writing my 1,075th blog post today … and it will be a terrific disc jockey.  This disc jockey works at a local radio station … and I had the chance to meet him in McDonald back in 2013.

The disc jockey’s name is Kenny Woods and he’s a disc jockey at 101.5 WORD-FM, which is a Christian radio station in Pittsburgh.  He also worked at 3WS in Pittsburgh in the ’90s … and I would sometimes listen to him on there.  Believe it or not, whenever he did his show on 3WS Back then, you would sometimes hear Rick Sebak say, “He’s a world-class authority on amusement parks,” which is from his show, “Kennywood Memories.”  It was probably a play on words or something like that.  Well, Kenny may not be an amusement park expert, but he is my second favorite Pittsburgh disc jockey ever, behind only former WISH 99.7 disc jockey Dan Dunlap.

This was an experience that I will never forget.  Tunch Ilkin is by far one of the best people that the Steelers has ever had.  Again, if you were wondering why I called today’s blog post “Tunch And Joseph,” you’ll know why.  It’s about me meeting a celebrity named Tunch Ilkin.

Joseph’s Flashback: Joseph meets a member of the “Jeopardy!” Clue Crew

This year, “Jeopardy!” is celebrating its 35th season on television … and WPXI, the NBC affiliate here in Pittsburgh, has aired the game show almost every evening at 7:00 for 31 years.  It has also aired in various other time slots as well over the years.

Now, the game show has some people who are part of its “Clue Crew” … and, back in September of 2005, while I was seeing the MDA Telethon in person at Monroeville Mall, I got to meet one of the members of the “Clue Crew.”  His name is Jimmy McGuire, who, like me, hails from the Pittsburgh area.  I was able to snap a photo with him while I was seeing the event in person.  I really had fun at the MDA Telethon.
